Vision And Eye Care Problems: Foreign Objects In The Eye

We've all felt irritation when an eyelash gets stuck in our eyes, but did you know that foreign objects in the eye can actually cause eye damage? When you think there may be a foreign object in your eye, it can be hard to focus on anything other than the pain. Our Clarksville office, Sites Vision Clinic, has an optometry team experienced in providing care for various eye injuries, including those caused by a foreign object getting into your eye.

Foreign Objects In The Eye: What To Do

When there is a foreign object in your eye, you can usually feel that something isn't quite right. Your eye may itch or tear, you may be extremely sensitive to light, and it's likely that you'll experience eye pain. Eyelashes, dust, dirt, makeup, and other small particles are all capable of almost invisibly sitting on the surface of the eye, causing discomfort with every blink. If the foreign object is embedded in the eye, causing bleeding, or is making it difficult to close your eye, seek emergency care. If you are simply experiencing discomfort, you can usually remove the object at home. First, wash your hands. Get in front of a bright light and a mirror, and look up while pulling the lower eyelid down. If this does not allow you to remove the object, repeat the same process with the top eyelid. If you see the object, you can usually remove it with a clean cotton swab. If that does not work, try to immerse the eye in a bowl of water and blink several times to flush the object out.
