When considering LASIK surgery, you probably have a lot of questions about this procedure. At Sites Vision Clinic, our team of optometry professionals are more than happy to address your concerns for LASIK and decide if it is the right type of surgery for your needs.
For the most part, patients don’t feel any discomfort during the procedure due to numbing drops. Patients may feel some slight pressure when the laser reshapes the cornea.
After applying numbing drops to the eye, an eye surgeon makes a thin flap on the surface of the cornea using a microkeratome. Then, he or she uses a laser to shape the cornea according to the patient’s prescription. Lastly, the eye doctor places the flap back in place to complete the surgery.
Since the healing time is minimal, an eye doctor can attend to both eyes during the same procedure. If patients prefer to have one eye done at a time, it’s possible. However, by doing so, it can make the eyes uncomfortable.
LASIK is performed very quickly. It can take up to ten minutes per eye to correct the refractive error.
Some patients do experience mild discomfort after LASIK. After a few days of having the procedure done, patients may have light sensitivity, dryness, or watering of the eyes. This is part of the healing process. Our optometrist or the eye surgeon can give you medicated eye drops to use after the procedure.
After LASIK surgery, patients’ vision may appear foggy as if opening the eyes underwater. However, this only lasts a few hours. Many patients will notice an immediate improvement in vision after twenty-four hours.
