Lasik
Lasik is an ever growing popular alternative to contacts and glasses. LASIK, laser vision corrective surgery, uses state of the art technology to perform delicate surgery to reshape and correct imperfections in the eye's cornea to correct impaired vision. As with any surgery, there are risks and possible complications, but hundreds of people have had LASIK surgery with very positive results.
To see clearly, the cornea and lens of your eyes bend incoming light to focus on the retina, which is then transferred to your brain as an image. Many people have less than perfect corneas, which can cause astigmatisms, near-sightedness and far-sightedness by focusing that light either before or after the retina, resulting in a distorted image. By using laser surgery to correct these problems, most people can return to an active life without the use of contacts or glasses.
Lasik is an outpatient surgical procedure. The patient is given an anethetic eye drop that numbs the surface of the eye. The surgery usually takes 10 to 15 minutes per eye. Both eyes are not always done at once. During surgery, a special device cuts a hinged flap of thin corneal tissue off the outer layer of the eye, which is lifted out of the way. The laser then ershapes the underlying corneal tissue, and the surgeon replaces the flap, which quickly adheres to the eye without stitches. A protetive shield is then placed over the eye to protect the flap. Some discomfort after surgery is expected, but your doctor can prescribe a painkiller if necessary. Your vision will be blurry the day of the surgery, but should dramatically improve by the next day.
LASIK is not for everyone. Sites Vision Clinic offers LASIK screening exams to those interested in the surgery to ensure that their eyes are healthy and suitable for laser vision surgery.
